Emraan Hashmi aka Sanjay Athray aka Mr Ghanchakkar

Sanjay Athray is a vault-breaker who has taken an early voluntary retirement from his profession. His current behaviour is totally like that of an elderly retired person. He attends to his small garden early in the morning, watches TV most of the day and sips quality wine at night. He dresses in comfy cottons and is absolutely unflappable. Sanju’s demeanour changes after he comes out of ‘retirement’, to be a part of a heist with some other conmen who knew his ex-partner.

Sanju is entrusted with the loot, but he forgets where he kept it. He begins to forget a lot of other things, too, but his memory is sharp when it comes to certain other matters — anniversaries, for example. As the pressure to find the loot increases, a brutally honest, ultra-cool Sanju suddenly becomes extremely hassled and suspicious. He becomes prone to sarcasm and bouts of anger.

Is Sanju suffering from some medical problem or is he making a ghanchakkar out of all of us?

Vidya Balan aka Neetu Athray aka Mrs Ghanchakkar
It would be difficult to guess from her clothes that Neetu is a regular reader of a fashion magazine, which she buys from the neighbourhood newspaper stand. It would also be difficult to guess from the taste of the dishes she cooks that Neetu is very fond of cooking. And it is even more difficult to guess from her sweet demeanour that a fire-brand Punjaban lies trapped inside. The old adage ‘opposites attract’ describes her marriage to a T.

Neetu is not into comfy clothes, she is into fashion atrocities. She exhibits her feelings and doesn’t really enjoy the contemplative retired life that they are leading. She never thinks enough is enough; she believes life should be lived when one is young and everything — from the TV to the apartment and family holidays — should be kingsize. But as Sanju observes his wife, he begins to wonder if this loving homemaker is for real. Or, is she actually conning the conman?
