Why is Madhur Bhandarkar getting so defensive about Heroine?

Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine which released last week didn’t really get good reviews from the critics. The national award winning director whose previous films like Chandni Bar, Fashion etc. have been critically acclaimed was slammed this time around for a lackluster script. The biggest flak that he received was that all the characters and even the script was very similar to his previous works. The criticism has obviously not gone too well with Madhur who seems quite defensive about his latest movie Heroine. In stead of talking about why Heroine didn’t get the expected appreciation the director is busy explaining the business economics of the film “Honestly, I am happy. The film has grossed Rs 25 crore in India in the first three days of its release. I made the film in Rs 21 crore. The total collections of Fashion were Rs 27 crore”, said Madhur in an interview.

Earlier Madhur had said that the film was made on a budget of 32 crore however now he has a different story to tell. “Definitely, my creativity in the film, but Heroine was made on a budget of 21 crore and since its release, it has made 25 crore! The film has an “A” certificate and it has got Kareena playing the lead – I am overwhelmed by the audiences’ love for my film, Heroine. The box office collections of Heroine are stable and steady and we are going to make 15 crore on satellite rights and from the endorsements Kareena did in the film. Heroine is a profitable venture for all those involved in the film,” he said while talking to a leading daily.

We think Madhur should just accept that Heroine didn’t really get the feedback that was expected from it rather than explaining it’s business economics all the time. Looks like the director is only interested in proving how Heroine is a profitable venture for him and also for the distributors. Why not come up with something original next time Madhur?
